Branch Out

With a little creativity, holiday trees can be elevated from ordinary to breathtaking. As we prepped for the season, we asked four local designers and florists to adorn the same tree using their own unique style. The result was nothing short of fabulous.

Thanksgiving Glitz

How to do it:

- Don’t be afraid to overstuff. Push decorations in toward the trunk to add texture. For example, here the pumpkins and moss balls create a fun vibe.

- Green pipe cleaners are a great way to secure ornaments and elements onto the branches.

- A fall- or Thanksgiving-themed tree can be easily transformed as Christmas approaches. Simply remove the fall leaves and add big bronze ornaments.

Natural Curiosity

How to do it:

- For a natural, earthy feel, grab a pair of pruners and go for a walk outside. Trim bushes or branches around your yard and incorporate those elements into the tree.

- Seeded eucalyptus (an inexpensive plant you can pick up at a wholesale store) is a fun addition, and it holds paint well. Spray it a color that matches your home décor.

- When placing decorations, start at the very top of the tree. Move one foot down to the left and then to the right, using a criss-cross pattern.  It helps attain a balanced look.

Fresh Twist on Christmas Past

How to do it:

- Play with colored light combinations, like red and white. The green from the tree rounds out the traditional Christmas colors. (And be cautious: Always use a power strip for safety.)

- When topping, think outside the box. The angel at the peak of this tree, for example, is actually a standing figurine secured with string. Also on top is white cotton, which can be found at a local florist.

- When deciding on ornaments, sort through them with your family. Pick the ones you treasure most and be inspired from there.

Cozy and Fresh

How to do it:

- Looking for an alternative to ornaments? Try fresh fruit. Apples, pears, kumquats, pomegranates and oranges dry well and add a pop of color to any conifer.

- Create a message on burlap. Turn it into a do-it-yourself project using a brown art pen to showcase a seasonal phrase of your liking.

- Add another fresh twist with flowers. Fill mini flower pots with roses and tuck antique hydrangeas into the tree (they’ll dry and provide a nice scent). Update the flowers as the season progresses for a subtle change.
