The Makeover: Jody Bruck's Deserving Transformation

From the July/August 2014 issue of Capital Style

Capital Style is teaming with several local style experts to transform one deserving woman in each issue this year. Meet Jody Bruck, a kindergarten teacher, a breast cancer survivor and a mother who is eager to begin a new chapter as an empty nester.

Meet Jody Bruck

Age: 54

Neighborhood: Powell

Family: Husband, Dan and sons Daniel, 26, Adam, 24, and Patrick, 19

Her story: This fall, Jody and her husband will embrace a new lifestyle as empty nesters when their youngest son heads off to college. As her three boys have grown, Jody has spent countless hours at sports games and practices. She’s also been in the classroom, teaching kindergarten for nearly 30 years. Jody teaches at Cranbrook Elementary in Columbus, where her classes often include non-English speaking students. “I get about 150,000 hugs a week,” she says. “I love when the students see me and come down the hallway and give me a hug.” With a little bit more free time, Jody, who is breast cancer-free after a diagnosis 12 years ago, hopes to volunteer and give back to the community. “This makeover could not have come at a better time as my life is changing,” Jody says. “This was a great opportunity.”

Hair at J.Bentley

Jody likes her hair long, so Master Artist and Color Stylist Kara Schindler focused on adding caramel color to her locks. “We’re breaking up the darkness and using highlights to complement her eyes and skin tone,” Schindler says.

Since Jody expressed some concern with clogging, Master Esthetician Cara King used the Aveda Deep Cleansing Herbal Clay Masque. “Clay is really good at pulling out those impurities,” King says.

King targeted Jody’s eyes, using brown liner and a cool-toned eye shadow to make them pop.

Tan from Bliss Airbrush Tanning

Owner Abby Bowman gave Jody a beach glow. “Jody already has a nice base color,” she says, “so we were able to use a darker color to really amplify her already existing tan.”

Katelyn Himes gave Jody a summer-ready manicure using China Glaze’s Pink-ie Promise polish.

Outfit from Thread on Grandview

“Jody is reinventing a little bit, and she’s got a lot of great confidence,” says Amber Kuehn, director of stores at Thread. She wore a VINCE blouse ($245), MiH Paris denim ($180) and K.Jacques sandals ($275). Accessories included Winifred Grace earrings ($158), a Pluma Jewelry necklace ($86) and a Lizzie Fortunato bracelet ($220).
