Over his 25-year career, makeup artist Tim Maurer has traveled with the likes of the Dixie Chicks, Patti LaBelle and Hillary Clinton. But an itch to spend more time with his partner, Sanito Mendoza, prompted him to reconsider life on the road. So a decade ago, he and Mendoza teamed to open Mukha Custom Cosmetics & Medi-Spa in the Short North. They offer skin treatments, custom makeup and more. “I literally change people’s lives every day,” Maurer says. “A lot of women don’t think they’re pretty. Subtle changes in their makeup routine can make a huge difference in their personality.”
Favorite tools of the trade:
A heated eyelash curler, individual false lashes and mascara. It’s all about the eyes.
Best drugstore find:
Cetaphil cleanser. It was originally developed to wash infants. It’s a non-foaming cleanser that dissolves makeup. You can shave your legs with it and wash your face with it. Nothing beats it. It’s around $9 for a big bottle. Also, I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and all the makeup artists on the road use Great Lash mascara.
Expertly-done Botox. It’s the best way to get results.
Favorite custom product:
Our liquid foundation. It’s the top-selling product in the company. We customize the texture, wearability, the amount of sunscreen. Every single part of the foundation is customized. We can add things for inflammation. It’s both makeup and skincare, and is $49.50 for a 2-oz. bottle.
Five-minute makeup routine:
Men should be allowed to look as good as women. I do a custom airbrush every day. And underneath it I wear our Hyalurepair—it’s got pure hyaluronic acid.
Favorite treatment at Mukha:
The youth peel. It gives dramatic results in one session. You get 10 years back for three minutes of torture. But nothing compares.
In the summer, it’s a linen shirt and pants. If it’s other times, a navy pinstripe suit. I don’t believe in denim. I don’t wear it. I think the world has gotten super casual. I should have been born in the 1920s.
Perfect night out in Columbus:
First a cocktail at De-NoVo, then dinner at Rigsby’s and a Columbus Symphony concert.
Favorite way to spoil yourself:
Two days off in a row. It’s really that simple. It doesn’t happen often, so I look forward to it.
