Capital Style is teaming with several local style experts to transform one deserving woman in each issue this year. Meet Ruth Downing, a nurse practitioner and small-business owner whose passion is forensic healthcare and educating the community about domestic violence.
Meet Ruth Downing
Job: Nurse practitioner and owner of Forensic Healthcare Consulting
Family: Husband, Dan; three children
Ruth juggles two professions: She’s a nurse at an area urgent care and owns Forensic Healthcare Consulting, which works to curb domestic violence and help victims. “My motto is integrating health and justice,” Downing says. “I’ll go wherever my community takes me.” Ruth recently lost 50 pounds, and this makeover allowed her time to relax while giving her renewed confidence. “I feel like a new woman,” she says. “I feel about 10 years younger and very pampered.”
Hair at J.Bentley
Education manager and master artist Steve Napier gave Ruth a pixie cut to lighten the shape and brighten her eyes. “I lightened the color up so there is more textural movement.”
Skin Treatments at Sullivan Centre
Ruth underwent upper blepharoplasty, an eyelid surgery to remove extra skin and give her a more youthful appearance. “It is so nice to open my eyes all the way,” Ruth says. She also had a series of laser hair removal treatments on her chin.
Makeup at Mukha
Skin therapist Megan Faccenda enhanced Ruth’s eyes with false lashes. “You don’t have to be a makeup artist to do this,” she says. “It’s a matter of taking the tweezers and placing them on the lash line, not on the skin.”
Clothing from Boho 72
“We wanted something to broaden the shoulders a little bit and flatten the tummy,” says Jamie Mollwitz, owner of Boho 72. Printed pants ($64), a cami ($15) and a denim shirt ($65) helped achieve that look.
Spa Treatments at Woodhouse Day Spa
Ruth spent a morning soaking in a bathtub and enjoying a massage during the Rest and Renewal Ritual, and received a manicure with a sheer pink gel polish—and a touch of sparkle.
Accessories from Audacious Boutique
A yellow rose necklace ($20) and bracelet ($25) added color, and a simple pair of gold hoops ($15) completed the look. The clutch ($45) has space inside for credit cards, a phone and other must-haves on a night out.
