THE KITCHEN

With six hungry mouths to feed and plenty of friends to entertain, the Jeffers spend a lot of time in their kitchen. On either side of the main sink are four dishwashers (two deep and two shallow) designed to look like cabinetry. "That's maybe one of my favorite things about the house," Amelia said. Above the sink, a German house blessing graces the wall. Across the room, the stove includes a griddle and, above it, a pot filler that stretches over all of the burners so pots can be filled with water without being hauled to and from the sink. Beside the stove, on the countertop, sits a lazy heart trivet made in the 1770s that Jeff gave Amelia as an anniversary gift. "I love that thing that is sitting off to the side that someone might not notice," Amelia said. In the dining area just beyond the kitchen's edge, the family eats at a table that Jeff made himself out of curly maple.
