In a time when cupcake companies are popping up faster than you can eat the few-bite treats, it was a refreshing change to recently meet a local baker who’s carving a different kind of sweet niche. Ann Miller-Tobin perfects the savory sweet balance that makes a great cheesecake as the signature treat of Diva Desserts. In all sizes (from one bite to a feast), she crafts traditional New York style cheesecakes, plus a bevy of flavors that fit her fun-loving personality, such as key lime macadamia or chocolate pecan heath. A cook by trade, Miller-Tobin fell into baking while working both on stage and in the kitchen at 2Co’s Cabaret in the Short North. It’s here she discovered her talent for crafting scrumptious sweet treats (including her chocolate Kaluha cake—a mandatory try for any sweet-lover’s bucket list). She realized she could make a career out of desserts when, relocating to Chicago for a few years, she began making more money selling her cheesecakes on the side than at her actual job. Now back in Columbus, she’s launched Diva Desserts from her home, hoping to eventually open her own storefront. Cheesecake is her main thing—but she’s also got gourmet desserts, pies and cookies (the ones we tried were all delicious). You can order her treats for parties or even a reception dessert bar, or look for her at the Clintonville Farmers Market, Shadowbox Live (ask for Oreo cheesecake) or a host of other places. Visit her website at DivaDesserts.com for more.
You can also catch her tomorrow night at Cakes for a Cause, a fundraiser for, and at, the Mid-Ohio Foodbank in Grove City from 6 to 9 p.m. Diva Desserts will be defending its Golden Spatula title, which she won as a crowd favorite last year.
